COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) recently named Surry Community College baseball player Chaise Swisher as a 2006 Academic All-American.  Swisher was one of only two baseball players selected from Region X, which consists of eleven junior and community colleges in North and South Carolina.  Surry also had the distinction of being one of only 14 colleges in the nation with both an NJCAA Academic All-American and an NJCAA All-American.  Earlier in June, Surry's Ryan Petty was selected to the 2nd Team NJCAA All-American squad. Swisher (left) becomes the fifth Surry baseball player in six years to be named an Academic All-American.  Matt Scott became the college's first selection in 2001; followed by Travis Motsinger in 2002; Jeremy Branch in 2003; and Jared Moser in 2005.  Scott completed a bachelors degree from UNC-Pembroke while being a member of the baseball team for two years.  Motsinger completed both a bachelors and masters degree at High Point University while also pitching two seasons for the Panthers and serving as an assistant coach during this past season.  Branch completed his bachelors degree from Appalachian State University, and is currently pursuing a master's degree with Gardner-Webb University; while Moser is currently pursuing a bachelors degree at North Carolina State University.  Swisher compiled a .300 average during his career at Surry.  The former Elkin high school standout scored eleven runs, walked seven times, collected two doubles, and notched a .400 slugging percentage and .536 on-base percentage during this past season while serving as a catcher for the Knights.  Swisher  was just as impressive in the classroom during his two academic years at Surry obtaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.77. During Swisher's stay at Surry, the 2005 team notched a 47-14 record and finished as runner-up in the Region X Tournament.  The 2006 squad finished with a 41-18 record and third place finish at the Region X Tournament.  Swisher will join twenty other Surry teammates from the 2006 team that will be transferring to four-year colleges or universities. Swisher will continue his education this fall at Appalachian State University.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- Surry's Ryan Petty has been named to the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Baseball All-American Second Team.  Petty, a sophomore outfielder from Kannapolis, NC becomes the seventh player in school history to earn All-American distinction.  Surry has also had four Academic All-Americans.  Petty (right) was selected to the All-Eastern District team and was also named All-Region X First Team.  Petty led the Knights in batting average (.433), hits (74), and runs scored (56) while adding  8 home runs, 56 runs batted in, and 14 doubles.  The center fielder also collected 14 walks while stealing 15 bases.  Petty led the Knights to an 88-32 record during his two seasons.  Surry went 47-14 in 2005, while finishing 41-18 in 2006.

SPARTANBURG, SC- Surry finished third in the 2006 Region X Tournament held at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  The Knights season ends with a 41-18 record, the third consecutive year with more than 40 wins.  Surry's Ryan Petty and Daniel Smith (left) were selected First Team All-Region while Josh Bentley and Steven Stewart were voted Second Team All-Region.
